Ball State fires football coach
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — Ball State fired coach Stan Parrish on Tuesday, a few days after finishing the season 4-8.
Parrish stepped in for Brady Hoke to coach the Cardinals in the GMAC Bowl after the 2008 campaign, then led the team to a 2-10 finish the next season before this year’s disappointing season ended with a 59-21 home loss to Northern Illinois.
“As we evaluated the on-field performance and the football program in its entirety, we decided it was time for a change in direction in the leadership of the program,” athletic director Tom Collins said.
Parrish has a 61-50-3 record in 11 years as a head coach.
The school says the search for a new coach will begin immediately. Eddie Faulkner, who has served as Ball State’s offensive coordinator the last two seasons, will serve as interim head coach.

Indiana's Big Tree Register is available

Indiana DNR Release:

The 2010 Big Tree Register is now available for Hoosier big tree lovers. The book, which is published every five years, lists the largest known native trees in the state.

A photographic display by Pamela Dunn-Louks will showcase some of the more significant trees listed at the Natural Resources Education Center beginning Dec. 1, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors to the Big Tree Display will receive a free copy of the book and an accompanying bookmark.

The book was printed with help from the Indiana Urban Forest Council and a grant from the USDA Forest Service. It is available by mail or pick up from the Community and Urban Forestry (CUF) Office at 5785 Glenn Road, Natural Resources Education Center (NREC) in Fort Harrison State Park.

To have a copy mailed, contact (317) 591-1170 or plouks@dnr.IN.gov. The book is posted at

Grant money available from DNR for fight insect in Great Lakes Basin

Indiana DNR Release:

Municipalities and non-profits in the Great Lakes Basin region of northern Indiana may be eligible for a portion of $200,000 in federal grant funds available to help mitigate issues associated with the emerald ash borer (EAB), an insect that is killing Indiana’s ash trees.

The grant funds are being distributed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ divisions of Forestry, and Entomology/Plant Pathology.

Municipalities and non-profits in the following counties are eligible for funds, if they meet the criteria of an EAB infestation. Counties are classified as being wholly in the GLB (DeKalb, LaGrange, Steuben) or partially in the GLB (Adams, Allen, Elkhart, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Noble, Porter, St. Joseph and Wells).

The money is to be used for removing infested ash trees and replanting with alternative large tree species, taking street tree and park inventories to identify and quantify the economic loss of ash, forming management plans to deal with ash mortality that will occur, and doing restoration along riparian corridors infested by EAB.

The deadline for application is Jan. 15, 2011. Amounts that can be applied for range from $5,000 to $30,000 with 50 percent cash or in-kind match. For more information, contact Louks at (317) 591-1170 or plouks@dnr.IN.gov.

All of the funds, which are being passed through by the Environmental Protection Agency to the USDA Forest Service and its state partners, “must be used directly for projects leading to the protection, maintenance or restoration of the chemical, biological or physical integrity of the GLB watershed in the United States. The Great Lakes watershed is defined as those areas within the United States draining into either Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie or Lake Ontario, or draining into the St. Lawrence River west of where the International Boundary Line leaves the river,” according to the USFS.

The northern Indiana counties dealing with EAB issues are also dealing with degradation of their watersheds that flow directly into the Great Lakes. The degradation is caused by the loss of ash trees, which are large maturing species that deliver environmental benefits along city streets, in parks, and along water corridors.

“Large maturing species of trees like ash intercept large amounts of storm water and pollutants that flow into our creeks and streams,” said Pam Louks, Community and Urban Forestry (CUF) coordinator for the DNR Division of Forestry. “There are many negative environmental consequences if a community has a large number of ash trees, and if they are removed due to the EAB infestation.”

Once the trees are gone, the benefits disappear. Water and air becomes more polluted, streams and creeks are not shaded, so the water temperature is higher, which affects aquatic plant and animal life. Finally, the degradation flows into the Great Lakes—adding to the list of threats to these crucial water bodies.

Letter From Terri Worden:

November 2010

Hello!

As of May 2010, I retired from coaching girls’ tennis for 34 years at Norwell High School. I have a great respect for the game and see the benefit of this sport in competition and recreation. Taking this different step in my life has inspired me to promote a project for the good of tennis at Norwell High School and the community: a tennis pavilion. It would be placed west of the present 10 tennis courts.

Originally, I planned to contact only female tennis alumni. Yet as word of this idea spread, I noted others who felt this was a worthwhile project. Therefore, I have decided to extend to male tennis alums, parents, businesses, NWCS staff, the community, etc.

This 20’ by 30’ structure will provide a facility for team gatherings, protection from inclement weather, a place (with electricity, serving counter, and picnic tables) for snacks, an improved storage unit, and a central location for reporting scores and posting information. Recently Norwell has been hosting the boys’ and girls’ tennis sectional; this is one example of how the facility would be useful. As well, the pavilion could be used as a resting or eating place for those who walk the grounds or attend a nearby baseball game.

The design of the pavilion is attractive, but reasonable, and has been created by graduate architects Nick and Angie Worden. Furthermore, I have contacted local professionals to provide estimates and labor to put together a quality structure. The plan has been approved by Northern Wells Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Mills, the school board, and Head of NWCS Maintenance John Kochert.

The estimated amount for the tennis pavilion is $18,300. I realize this request is going to people from all income categories. I respect all donations, but donations in the triple and even quadruple digits are needed. Ideally, I would like to construct the building in the summer of 2011. If donations fall short, the account will stay on hold and further efforts will need to be taken. Norwell High School is a non-profit, so this donation is tax deductible.

In order to keep informed of the NHS Tennis Pavilion project, you may go to the school corporation website to see the periodic updates: HYPERLINK "http://www.nwcs.k12.in.us/NHS/nhs.html" http://www.nwcs.k12.in.us/NHS/nhs.html Select NHS Athletics on the left and then select NHS Tennis Pavilion Campaign.

I have obtained many of my former female tennis players’ addresses, but only a few of the male athletes. Please help in spreading the word to anyone you know who would be willing to donate. Our times need to promote the out-of-doors and physical activity: tennis is one way to do this. This building will benefit the young adults of Northern Wells, as well as, all patrons of the community. I thank you for your assistance with this effort.

Sincerely,

Terri Worden
Former Norwell Girls Tennis Coach and NHS Tennis Pavilion Chairperson

St. Joseph River in South Bend to be stocked with coho salmon

Indiana DNR Release:

Indiana DNR will be stocking approximately 11,000 coho salmon into the St. Joseph River near Veterans Memorial Park in South Bend in late November.

The coho salmon will be the first produced and stocked into the St. Joseph River by Indiana since the trout and salmon stocking program began on the river in 1984. These fish will be approximately 6 inches in length and will out-migrate to Lake Michigan after a short time in the river.

Brian Breidert, Indiana’s Lake Michigan biologist said he is pleased to add this species to the St. Joe program.

“I feel we will see benefits to the river anglers beginning a couple of years down the road, but we will also see some benefit to our Lake Michigan anglers as early as the spring of 2012, since coho salmon congregate each spring in southern Lake Michigan.”

The fish are part of a small surplus that was recognized after the completion of stocking into Trail Creek and the Little Calumet River, where 242,000 coho salmon were stocked from Bodine and Mixsawbah State Fish Hatchery.

Breidert said the Lake Michigan stocking team has been looking at adding coho to the St. Joe program since early spring.

“Plans are underway to add this species to our suite of stockings into the future,” he said. “We have received support from local sport fishing groups such as the Michiana Steelheaders, Hoosier Coho Club as well as the Northwest Indiana Steelheaders just to name a few.

“There has been a decline in the past few years of our steelhead returns and the management team has been looking at reasons behind the declines but also looking toward another species to supplement our steelhead program while still maintaining our important Skamania brood stock program on the St. Joseph River.”

Near-record harvest possible for deer season

Indiana DNR Release:

Indiana’s annual firearms season for white-tailed deer opens Saturday (Nov. 13) with near-record harvest expected for all deer seasons combined.

The record overall deer harvest is 132,752, set last year, with roughly 83,000 being harvested during the firearms season, including almost 36,000 on opening weekend.

Department of Natural Resources biologists expect hunters to kill more than 80,000 deer again this year during the 16-day firearms season, which ends Nov. 28.

“Harvest numbers for the season will always be about the same as the previous year,” DNR deer biologist Chad Stewart said. “With the dry fall we’ve been having, the corn harvest is vastly accelerated compared to last year, which means less potential cover for deer.

“I anticipate a record or near-record harvest, and obviously, the firearms season is a major component of that harvest.”

Harvest composition on opening weekend is typically an approximate 60:40 split favoring antlered deer, but more antlerless deer are typically harvested than antlered deer by the end of the firearms season.

“Hunters will always want to go out on opening day with the hopes of harvesting a buck,” Stewart said. “That’s what causes hunters to lie awake the night before and it’s what they think about while sitting in their hunting stand while it’s still pitch black out that opening morning. So hunters are undoubtedly selecting their bucks to harvest on that opening weekend.

“But as the season progresses, since more does are able to be killed than bucks, the numbers eventually catch and surpass the buck total.”

Biologists will again be at nearly 40 check stations across the state on opening day to collect age information and biological samples from deer checked, testing primarily for the presence of chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis.

“So far, we have not detected either in free-ranging deer in Indiana,” Stewart said.

Favorable weather conditions were a factor in hunters killing 35,898 deer on the opening weekend of firearms season in 2009, an increase of more than 4,700 over the first two days of the 2008 firearms season. A weather system that went through on opening day of the 2008 season brought rain, sleet, and freezing rain to much of Indiana, reducing the harvest during opening day of that year.

The number of deer harvested in individual counties last year ranged from a low of 96 deer in Tipton County to 4,102 deer in Steuben County. Harvest exceeded 1,000 deer in 62 counties; exceeded 2,000 deer in 19 of those counties; and exceeded 3,000 deer in five of those counties.

Unless otherwise exempted, a license is required to hunt deer during the firearms season. Licenses can be purchased online at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov, by calling 317-232-4200, or at a retailer or DNR site listed at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov.

License exemptions and other deer hunting information can be found in the online DNR Deer Hunting Guide at www.dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/2343.htm

16 State Parks to close temporarily for deer reductions

Indiana DNR Release:

Standby Drawing at Indiana Dunes State Park

Select Indiana State Parks will be closed temporarily for two rounds of controlled deer reductions in the coming weeks.

The first reduction is Nov. 15-16; the second round is Nov. 29-30. The participating parks will close to the general public the evening before each of the two efforts and re-open the morning after each two-day reduction.

Each year, DNR biologists evaluate which parks require a reduction in deer population, based on habitat recovery and previous hunter success at each park. The state parks closing temporarily this year for deer reductions are Brown County, Chain O’Lakes, Charlestown, Clifty Falls, Fort Harrison, Indiana Dunes, Lincoln, McCormick’s Creek, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Prophetstown, Shakamak, Summit Lake, Tippecanoe, Versailles, and Whitewater Memorial.

Indiana’s state parks are home to more than 32 state-endangered plants and numerous significant natural communities. Deer reductions help control browsing by deer to a level that helps maintain ecosystems.

“Although the parks have had much success since the first reduction in 1993, a high no-show rate of those drawn and over-selective hunting remain a challenge for the program,” said Mike Mycroft, chief of natural resources in the DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs, who oversees the program.

Only individuals and those listed on their applications drawn last September may participate at any park, besides Indiana Dunes State Park.

At Indiana Dunes State Park each morning of the reductions, a public standby drawing to fill spots left vacant after 9:30 a.m. CST will take place. To be eligible for the draw, the candidate must be an Indiana resident (or possess a valid lifetime license to take deer), be 18 years of age by Nov. 15, and possess any valid deer license. Those wishing to participate can bring up to two fellow participants. Any firearm legal for taking deer in Indiana (excluding archery) is allowed. Participants can harvest up to three deer, only one of which can be antlered. Deer taken are in addition to all other state bag limits. Individuals must wear a hunter orange hat or cap and a hunter orange vest, jacket, or overalls at all times while on the property. Potential hunters can register for the standby drawing beginning at 9 a.m. CST at the main gate of Indiana Dunes State Park. A valid photo ID is required. The draw results will be announced at approximately 9:45 a.m. CST near the main gate. Shooting hours conclude at 3 p.m. CST each day.

Information regarding 2011 state park deer reductions, including applications, will be available next summer at http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/.

DNR unveils online deer hunting guide

Indiana DNR Release:

With the deer firearms season set to begin on Saturday in Indiana, the Department of Natural Resources has posted a handy Deer Hunting Guide on its website.

Users can scan the 37-page guide online at www.dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/2343.htm, download it to a mobile phone capable of reading PDF files, or print it as a single document.

The guide includes basic information on license requirements, bag and possession limits, season dates, and equipment regulations.

It also has a county-by-county list of public hunting areas, from Yellowwood State Forest in Brown County to Blue Grass Fish & Wildlife Area in Warrick County. The 10-page list includes the property name, phone number, hunting opportunities, available acres, and other amenities, such as camping or shooting range.

In addition to basic information, the guide provides hyperlinks to complete language on hunting rules and regulations in Indiana, plus a hyperlink to a searchable database of mandatory check stations where successful hunters can take their deer.

NCAA checking out I.U. transfer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — The NCAA is taking another look at the eligibility status of Indiana’s Guy-Marc Michel.
The Martinique native attended high school and took college courses in France, where he played on a club basketball team that included professional players.
After leaving France, Michel played basketball at North Idaho Community College before joining the Hoosiers.
Indiana coach Tom Crean says the school expected the NCAA to take a longer look at Michel’s eligibility because of his foreign connections.
Crean says the Hoosiers expect Michel to be cleared by the NCAA in the next few weeks.

Indiana DNR shares national award for work on Great Lakes

Indiana DNR Release:

Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources was one of a group of organizations recently recognized with a U.S. Department of the Interior Partners in Conservation Award for being part of “what is becoming known as one of the world’s finest examples of trans-boundary cooperation” for work on the Great Lakes.

DNR’s Stu Shipman, north regional fisheries supervisor, received the award on DNR’s behalf from Suzette Kimball, deputy director of the U.S. Geological Survey, on Oct. 27.

Achievements by the award-winning group, which comprises state, federal and tribal fisheries agencies, along with the bi-national Great Lakes Fishery Commission, include: successful rehabilitation of native species; production of world-class research through technical committees and similar partnerships; disease prevention and management; development of common fish community objectives for each lake; effective coordination of law enforcement; publication of “State-of-the-Lake” reports; sharing of equipment, resources, and data; and cutting-edge research on aquatic invasive species and control, sustainable stocking levels, and allocation agreements on harvest quotas.

The Great Lakes fishery is one of the most important freshwater resources on Earth. It’s worth $7 billion, provides recreation to 5 million anglers, supports 75,000 jobs, and contributes to a rich cultural heritage valued by the more than 30 million people who live near the lakes.

In April 2009, the partners signed a new five-year agreement to confirm, once again, their commitment to leveraging each other’s resources, avoiding duplication of effort and sharing critical scientific data to help decision makers conserve and sustain the vitality of the Great Lakes.
