Southern Wells vs. Lafayette Central Catholic

Editor Glen Werling was there for the Southern Wells vs. Lafayette Central Catholic girls Regional Basketball Contest.

Lafayette Central Catholic won the game 45-38, but Southern Wells played one heck of a game.

In the first clip, News-Banner Sports Editor Paul Beitler is talking to Bluffton senior Hunter Copeland, who finished first in the 100-yard freestyle event. His championship effort enables him to compete Friday night in the preliminary round of the IHSAA state meet at Indianapolis.

In the second clip, Beitler talking to Bluffton coach Schlaura Linderwell, who was voted the sectional coach of the year by her fellow coaches. I asked her about how it felt to receive the award.

DNR biologist presented with national lifetime award

Indiana DNR Release:

Indiana Department of Natural Resources biologist Steve Backs, who has been intimately involved with the restoration of the state's wild turkey population, was recently presented with a lifetime achievement award by the National Wild Turkey Federation at its national convention.

Backs, a member of the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife, was one of two men receiving the Federation’s Wayne Bailey Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Indiana hunters largely owe the opportunity to enjoy their sport within state lines to Steve and his lifetime body of work," said Robert E. Carter Jr. DNR director. "This recognition on a national level affirms what DNR staff members have known for a long time."

Backs has spent 31 years dedicating his career to quail, wild turkey and grouse research and conservation. During that time, the number of wild turkeys in the state has increased dramatically, and its number of turkey hunters has grown from fewer than 1,000 to more than 60,000.

In 1996, Backs was honored as the IDNR's Division of Fish and Wildlife Biologist of the Year. During his career, he has received several other service awards.

"Steve has steadily produced quality research and insight into upland bird biology, from turkeys to quail and grouse," said Robert Abernethy, NWTF's assistant vice president of agency and outreach programs. "He has authored more than 350 internal reports and published more than 20 technical manuscripts, including papers in five of nine National Wild Turkey Symposiums.

"Upland bird biology wouldn't be what it is today without his contributions."

The award's namesake was a pioneer in the restoration of wild turkey populations.

"Wayne Bailey accomplished so much in his career and everyone looked up to him," Backs said. "To receive an award named after one of my mentors is truly humbling."

Hunters push deer harvest to record number

Indiana DNR Release:

INDIANAPOLIS –Indiana deer hunters had unprecedented success during the 2009 seasons, shattering the previous state record by taking more than 130,000 deer for the first time in the 59-year history of the modern era.

Reports submitted from 453 check stations across Indiana placed the 2009 total at 132,752 deer – more than 3,000, or 2 percent, above the 2008 harvest of 129,748, which was the previous record.

“It’s kind of predictable any more,” said Chad Stewart, DNR deer management biologist. “We’re going to have a record or near-record harvest every year unless things change.

“For a couple of years now we’ve had increased license sales. We’ve also had high unemployment. Maybe people have more time to be out. I wish I could say.”

One thing Stewart is sure of is there were no reports of epizootic hemorrhagic disease in 2009 after outbreaks the previous three years. EHD is an insect-borne virus that affects white-tailed deer. It is transmitted by biting insects called midges. EHD is not transmitted to humans and is not normally found in domestic animals.

“That means going into the season there were more deer on the ground available to hunters rather than disease getting them first,” Stewart said.

The full season report can be viewed at
http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-2009_Deer_Season_Summary.pdf.

The 2009 total was bolstered by a record 79,771 antlerless deer, 60 percent of the harvest.

The hunting season began in urban deer zones on Sept. 15, followed by a two-day youth only weekend (Sept. 26-27) and the early archery (Oct. 1-Nov. 29), firearms (Nov. 14-29), muzzleloader (Dec. 5-20) and late archery (Dec. 5 to Jan. 3) segments.

Adult males (antlered bucks) made up 40 percent of the total, of which 64 percent were 2.5 years old or older.

Hunters found the most success in the northeast corner of the state, where Steuben, Kosciusko and Noble counties ranked first, second and fourth, respectively.

Steuben hunters bagged 4,102 deer to mark the fifth straight year that county has led the state. It also was the first time any county topped the 4,000 mark in a single year. Kosciusko recorded 3,652 deer, followed by Switzerland with 3,223; Noble, 3,086; and Franklin, 3,063.

Modern-era records were set in 33 counties, and another 22 counties showed harvest increases from the 2008 season. Harvest totals declined in 36 counties compared to 2008.

Compiling the data is a lengthy process that begins in October when check stations are supplied envelopes for returning pink carbon copies of hunter-reported deer. Some stations submit reports on a weekly basis as requested; a few wait until the end of the season to return the information at one time.

DNR staff members in the Bloomington field office enter the early data, but the volume increases dramatically once the firearms season begins and additional staff from other locations is called upon to assist in entering everything from tag numbers assigned to reported deer to the sex and age of the deer, equipment used by the hunter, and the county where the deer was taken.

The information is merged into one data base in early to mid-February. The pink carbon copies are sorted by county and stored in Bloomington for three years. The data base is then checked for accurate spelling and to ensure there are no duplicate tag entries.

“That’s when my work really begins,” Stewart said. “It takes a couple of weeks to analyze the information and prepare the final report.”

The 2009 season also gave the DNR an opportunity to continue its ongoing surveillance for signs of chronic wasting disease in deer. Testing failed to detect CWD in tissue samples collected from 835 deer and has not been found in more than 11,000 specimens tested since 2002. CWD is a brain-wasting disease that is fatal to deer. It has been reported in deer in Wisconsin, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia and several other states.

The DNR also began surveillance for bovine tuberculosis by collecting tissue samples from 431 hunter harvested deer from Franklin, Harrison and Wayne counties. The DNR is awaiting results of testing on those samples from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.

DNR to present Canada goose management seminars next month

Indiana DNR Release:

If Canada geese have become a problem on your property, attend one of six seminars being presented in March by the Department of Natural Resources' Urban Wildlife Project.

The seminars will cover various aspects of Canada goose management, including relevant laws, basic biology, and methods to control goose damage. A demonstration on the proper techniques for egg and nest destruction will follow. Adhering to proper techniques is vital—if eggs are broken or completely removed from nests, the females will just lay another clutch of eggs.

The population of Canada geese in the Mississippi Flyway exceeds 1.5 million birds. Destroying eggs and nests in urban areas is helpful in controlling these numbers in areas where hunting cannot, which can reduce conflicts with people and Canada geese.

Federal rules allow landowners properly registered at https://epermits.fws.gov/eRCGR/geSI.aspx to complete Canada goose egg and nest destruction on their own property. Registrants must provide a summary report of their Canada goose nest destruction activities to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by Oct. 31. Failure to report can result in privileges being revoked for the forthcoming year.

The first seminar is March 8 at the Community Center in Clarksville. Seminars also will be held March 10 at Recreation Building 701 inside Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, and on March 11 at the Delaware County Fairground’s Heartland Hall in Muncie.

Other opportunities to attend the seminar will be March 22, at the Salomon Farm Visitors Center in Fort Wayne; March 23, at the Potato Creek State Park Nature Center near North Liberty; and March 24 at the Lake County Extension Service Office in Crown Point. All seminars run from 9:30 a.m. to approximately noon. All interested landowners, managers of corporate campuses, golf course or park employees, and the general public are invited.

The classes are free, and no registration is required. For further information, call the Urban Wildlife Biologist, (812) 334-1137 or e-mail swinks@dnr.IN.gov.

Norwell girls' semifinal basketball battle

News-Banner Sports Editor Paul Beitler was at Saturday night's Class 3A Sectional 22 semifinal girls' basketball game between Norwell and Fort Wayne Elmhurst.
The video action is late in the game, as it came down to the wire.
Sadly for Norwell, the Knights lost to Elmhurst 66-63 in a hotly-contested battle. Norwell was ranked No. 2 in Class 3A and Elmhurst (17-4) was No. 6. The Knights finished out a fantastic 21-1 season. Last year Elmhurst also ended Norwell's season in sectional action, 61-43, and the Trojans went on to become the 3A state champion.

Fiechter going to state

Southern Wells senior Darin Fiechter talks about qualifying for the Indiana Individual Wrestling State Finals with News-Banner Sports Editor Paul Beitler.

On Saturday Fiechter placed 4th to insure a berth in the 130-pound weight division. His older brother, Vince, preceded him as a state qualifier in 2003. Vince finished 4th in the 125-pound class for a state medallion.
Last year, Bluffton's Matthew Gerber, who is a cousin, finished 8th for a medal.

DNR offers tips on coping with coyotes

Indiana DNR Release:

It is not uncommon anymore for coyotes to be seen occasionally in urban and suburban areas of Indiana, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there are more of them.

One reason for higher visibility of coyotes at this time of year is that February is their mating season. Consequently, coyotes may be more mobile and more apt to be out in the open during daylight hours.

Another factor is snow cover. The brown coat of a coyote in motion can be seen more easily against a white backdrop.

Coyotes are opportunistic feeders and are highly adaptive to their surroundings. Readily available food sources are attractive to them, and small woodlots, riparian corridors and open fields represent suitable habitat.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources does not track population numbers on coyotes, but an annual survey in which deer hunters log wildlife sightings provides some insight. In 1992, the first year of the survey, hunters reported seeing 10 coyotes statewide per thousand hours of hunting. By 1995, the index reached 20 sightings and remained steady between 24 and 28 ever since.

Documented human-coyote conflicts are extremely rare. To reduce the chances of a conflict, the DNR and the U.S. Department of Agriculture offer the following advice:

– Do not feed coyotes;
– Do not allow pets to run free. Provide secure nighttime housing for them;
– Feed pets indoors whenever possible. Pick up leftovers if feeding outdoors and store pet and livestock feed where it’s inaccessible to wildlife;
– Eliminate water bowls and other artificial water sources whenever possible;
– Position bird feeders in a location that is less likely to attract small animals or bring the feeders indoors at night;
– Do not discard edible garbage where coyotes can get to it;
– Secure garbage containers;
– Trim and clean shrubbery at ground level to reduce hiding cover for coyotes or their prey;
– If you start seeing coyotes around your home, discourage them by shouting, making loud noises or throwing rocks, but NEVER corner a coyote – always give the coyote a free escape route.

Coyotes are wild animals protected by Indiana law, which requires the DNR to provide for the protection, care, management, survival and regulation of wild animal populations. Under that authority, the DNR establishes the methods, means and time of taking, chasing and selling wild animals.

The DNR controls the population of coyotes primarily by a regulated hunting and trapping season, which runs from Oct. 15 through March 15. A hunting or trapping license is required, unless the individual is hunting or trapping on land he/she owns. In addition, Indiana law allows landowners, or a person with written permission of a landowner, to take coyotes year-round on private property.

More information about coping with coyotes or other wildlife can be viewed by clicking on the Dealing with Nuisance Wildlife icon at www.dnr.IN.gov or by going to www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2351.htm.

New Wildlife Diversity report available online

Indiana DNR Release:

INDIANAPOLIS – The new Wildlife Diversity Annual Report, which documents the 2009 projects of the Wildlife Diversity Section of the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife, is available for viewing at: http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3347.htm

Each project was developed to help manage one or more of Indiana's native species, including Eastern box turtles, crawfish frogs, hellbenders, lake sturgeon, Allegheny woodrats (aka pack rats), redside dace (fish) and timber rattlesnakes.

The new Web publication also documents an ongoing study on the role interstate highways may serve as a potential barrier to the maintenance of genetic diversity in some wildlife species.
The WDS is responsible for the conservation and management of more than 750 species of nongame, endangered and threatened wildlife in Indiana. The WDS depends on donations from citizens to the Nongame Fund. In addition, the WDS receives reimbursements for expenditures through the State Wildlife Grants program administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The reimbursable expenditures must be used on projects involving Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) which were identified by Indiana’s Comprehensive Wildlife Strategy.

New Web site will connect forestry services

Indiana DNR Release:

Markets and marketing a product or service using Internet technology has become a mainstay of many businesses today.

Since landowners typically sell timber or seek professional forestry services once or twice in the ownership of the forest, connecting potential sellers and buyers just became easier.

The DNR Division of Forestry has developed an innovative new Web site – www.INForestryX.com – that creates a clearinghouse for forestry related commodities and services. The Web site is active now, with additional features in development.

The goals of the Web site include: facilitating trade and commerce of forest products, equipment, materials and services; improving landowner access to the forest product marketplace; and increasing the successful implementation of forest conservation projects by improving access to available conservation work in Indiana and surrounding states.

The Indiana hardwood market is the largest sector of the Indiana agricultural economy. The Indiana forest products industry has a $17 billion economic impact on the state, which has 4.7 million acres of forested lands, of which 85 percent is privately owned.

Indiana ranks first nationally in production of hardwood plywood, wood office furniture, wood kitchen cabinets, manufactured homes and wooden caskets and coffins.

Campground being closed
BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources plans to close the campground at a southern Indiana fishing area.
The agency says camping won’t be allowed beginning in March at the Williams Dam Public Fishing Area along the East Fork of the White River near Bedford.
The 37-acre fishing area, fishing platform and two boat ramps will remain open without any staff members on site after June. The 30-unit campground and some associated buildings will be removed.
The agency says the Williams Dam site is the only one of its 29 fishing areas with a campground. It says the campground generated little revenue to cover its costs and needed a sanitary dumping station that could cost as much as $40,000 to build.

Casinos make haul on Super Bowl
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Gambling regulators say Nevada casinos won almost $6.9 million on this year’s Super Bowl as bettors wagered $82.7 million on the NFL title game.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board said the win was $179,000 more than sports books won last year, on $1.21 million more in bets.

Williams Dam campground to close

Indiana DNR Release:

The DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife has announced plans to phase out a small campground that is part of the Williams Dam Public Fishing Area southwest of Bedford in Lawrence County.

Camping will no longer be allowed beginning in March.

However, the 37-acre fishing area, fishing platform, and two boat ramps that provide free public access to the White River will remain open but without staff on site after June 2010. Only the 30-unit campground and a handful of buildings associated with the campground are being removed.

Williams Dam is one of 29 state-managed public fishing areas across Indiana and the only one with a campground and on-site staff. Future management will be consistent with management at other public fishing areas which involves mowing and trash pick up. Law Enforcement will continue patrolling the area.

The planned closure of the campground is based on several factors, including:

– Rising costs to operate a facility that generates little revenue;
– Staffing changes;
– Non-compliance with State Department of Health sanitary regulations.

The campground lacks a sanitary dumping station required by the State Department of Health, and installing one could cost as much as $40,000.
