A 1962 graduate of Royerton High School, Peirson earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He lettered in basketball for Miami from 1964-66, and was inducted into that school's Hall of Fame in 1984. As an assistant coach, Peirson was a part of a staff that tallied six MAC titles and made six NCAA apperances. As the head coach, he led the team to the NCAA Tournament in 1985 and 1986.

After completing his coaching career, Peirson worked as a sales representative at Jostens from 1990-2001 before being named to the Ball State staff in 2001.
