Home-grown food sessions at Salamonie Reservoir in July

Food preservation classes to teach gardeners how to use the foods they grow will be offered at the Salamonie interpretive center, July 22, 27, and 29.

Class I teaches canning basics, class II features freezing tips. In class III, participants can try preserving jams, jellies and fruit. Each class runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and costs $10 per person.

Teresa Witkoske, Purdue Extension educator, will instruct each class. Upper Wabash Interpretive Services hosts the interactive sessions. Participants will take home excellent gardening and preserving hand-outs and samples.

Those interested can register for one, two or all three classes by calling the Wabash County Purdue Extension Office at (260) 563-0661, ext 246.

The interpretive center and gift shop’s normal hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The barrier-free building features exhibits, floor-to-ceiling windows in the wildlife viewing area, and staff to answer questions. Salamonie souvenirs are available for sale, as are bird feed and suet cakes.
