Norwell spikers top Eastbrook
Olivia Geiger, Lauren Klansek and Amanda McAfee powered the Norwell Knights to a 3-1 victory over Eastbrook in varsity volleyball action Monday night at Van Buren.
Geiger had 16 kills, Klansek 14 and McAfee 13 in the four games, which the Knights took by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23. The Knights are 11-4.
Geiger and Klansek also had two blocks each. Jessica Louison added four kills and Elizabeth Ault two. Louison also had four ace serves. McAfee and Ault each had two aces.
Laken Chaney had 43 assists and seven digs. Ault had 16 digs and McAfee 15. Louison had nine digs.

East Noble girls nip Norwell
Grace Chorpenning scored a first-half goal to lead East Noble to a 1-0 victory over Norwell in girls’ Northeast Hoosier Conference soccer on Monday at Kendallville.
Samantha Yates assisted on the goal. Christa Beber helped East Noble shut out Norwell as East Noble’s goalkeeper. Beber had eight saves. Norwell goalkeeper Haley Heller had 13 saves.
Norwell’s Lauren Johnson had seven shots on goal. Norwell is 2-5-2 overall and 1-3 in NHC matches.

Killingbeck part of big romp
Trine University senior linebacker Brandon Killingbeck had six tackles in the Thunder’s 76-6 romp over Bluffton University on Saturday. Killingbeck is a 2006 Southern Wells graduate. Trine is 2-0 on the season.

Tigers, Raiders at Ball State
The Bluffton Tigers and Southern Wells Raiders will face off in football Saturday, Sept. 25, at Ball State University’s Scheumann Stadium as part of the Allen County Athletic Conference day.
Game time is 10 a.m. Woodlan will play Garrett at 1 p.m., Heritage will play Leo at 4 p.m., and Adams Central will play South Adams at 7 p.m.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Tickets may be purchased at each school for $8. Tickets at Ball State will cost $10. Parking is free. Fans may tailgate before, during and after the games in the parking lot area. No alcohol permitted. No coolers are permitted in the stadium. The following items also will not be permitted: bags/packages larger than 16x16 inches, missile type objects, large signs or banners, pole-mounted flags or signs, laser pointers or weapons.
Ball State offers several unique opportunities for viewing the games. Suites may be rented, ranging in size from eight-person suites to the 172-person Club level. Handicap parking is available with properly displayed license plate or tag.

Sign up for Squires Basketball League
Any girl or boy in grades 3-6 in the Northern Wells Community School district may register for the Norwell Squires Basketball League by Friday, Oct. 1. Registration forms have been distributed to all schools. Games will be held on Saturdays in the Norwell High School auxiliary gym beginning Oct. 30. Northern Illinois coach hospitalized
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Northern Illinois football coach Jerry Kill has been hospitalized for dehydration.
School spokeswoman Donna Turner says the 49-year-old Kill was admitted to Kishwaukee Hospital early Sunday and was transferred to Northwestern Memorial on Monday.
Kill was treated for kidney cancer in 2005 while coaching at Southern Illinois. He had an unspecified surgical procedure performed on Sept. 3 and missed a Mid-American Conference coaches’ teleconference.
Kill was back at Huskies practice later in the week and coached last Saturday’s 23-17 victory over North Dakota. The team plays at Illinois on Saturday.

Indiana to induct Corso,
Waiters into Hall of Fame
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University is inducting ex-football coach Lee Corso and NFL linebacker Van Waiters into its sports hall of fame.
Corso and Waiters will join ex-football player Chuck Bennett, ex-basketball players Steve Green and Denise Salters and ex-golfer Wayne McDonald as new members of the Indiana Hall of Fame.
School officials announced the six honorees Monday. Inductions are Oct. 29 and inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Indiana-Northwestern football game.
Corso coached Indiana in 1973-82 and led the Hoosiers to their second bowl appearance in 1979. Green was top scorer on Indiana’s 1974-75 basketball team that went 31-0 before losing in the NCAA tourney. Salters is the women’s basketball career leader in scoring and rebounds.
