Wilson to play in all-star game
GOSHEN — Norwell senior Jenelle Wilson is one of 25 high school girls’ basketball players who has committed to play in the Kessler Sports’ Champions of Character All-Star Game on Friday, April 16.
The game will played at Goshen College’s Gunden Gymnasium, starting at 7 p.m.
Michele Harter of Warsaw and Kristi Kinewski of Penn will coach the split squads. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets will be available at the door. The game will be broadcast live on 91.9 FM and webcast on www.michianasportsauthority.com

Weekend of races at Anderson
ANDERSON — Anderson Speedway will host a big doubleheader weekend Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11.
On Saturday night, the IOFS Outlaw Figure 8s will be the showcase event with a 50-lap feature. The IOFS Front Wheel Drive division also will be on hand.
Other divisions in action on Saturday include ThunderCars, Street Stocks and Front Wheel Drive Figure 8s. Spectator gates open at 4 p.m., followed by racing at 7. Admission is $10 for adults and $4 for children 6-12. Children five and under get in free.
The USAC National Midgets will be on tap Sunday in a 100-lap race. A special practice session is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local divisions joining the midgets include the Front Wheel Drive Oval division and Pure Stocks. Spectator gates open at 11:15 a.m. with the racing at 2. Admission is $15 for adults and $4 for children 6-12. Children five and under get in free.

Montpelier track to open
Montpelier Motor Speedway is slated to open its 2010 racing season Saturday with a program featuring United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Modifieds, Super Street Stocks, Thunder Cars and Modified Lights.
Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing at 7.
General admission is $10 for adults, with children 12-and-under admitted free with a paid adult. College students will be admitted at half price with college ID.

Kite festival at Clifty Falls, April 17

Indiana DNR Release:

Clifty Falls State Park and the Hoosier Kitefliers Society will team up for a fun- filled kite-flying festival April 17.

The activity starts 10 through 11:30 a.m. EDT at the park’s Nature Center, where the Hoosier Kitefliers Society will host a kite-making workshop. Materials and assistance will be provided to help participants make an easy-to-fly “sled” kite.

The event’s annual kite Fun Fly, which is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey, takes place 1 to-2:30 p.m. EDT, just inside the S.R. 62 park entrance.

For participants age 12 or younger, a prize will be awarded to the highest flier and the flier most resembling a bird of prey, such as an eagle, hawk, vulture, falcon or owl.

All audiences are welcome. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Kites and kite lines flown during the event must be made of materials that do not conduct electricity.

Park admission is $5 per vehicle with an Indiana license plate; $7 for a vehicle with an out-of-state license plate. There is no charge for the workshop; however donations will be accepted to defray kite material costs.

Cody Cochran invited to Workout
Bluffton senior Cody Cochran is one of 60 Indiana high school basketball players invited to participate in Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 60 Workout on Sunday, April 11, on the campus of Marian University in Indianapolis.
In conjunction with the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, 28 candidates, primarily from northern and southern Indiana, will participate in the first session from 1-3 p.m. The remaining 32 players, primarily from central Indiana, will compete during the second session from 3:30-5:30.
Both sessions are open to the public for an admission charge of $6.

Spring Training for runners
The Ouabache River Runners Spring Training five and 10 mile runs are this weekend at Ouabache State Park.
This event is a perfect tune-up for Indy Mini runners or others wanting to improve their fitness. Races begin at 9 a.m. with registration at 7:30 a.m. at the lodge near the lake.

Safety tips for youth turkey season, April 17–18

Indiana DNR Release:

Indiana conservation officers encourage youth turkey hunters participating in the April 17 and 18 event to review the following basic turkey hunting safety guidelines and laws before going afield.

– Do not load your firearm until ready to use. Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

– Always remember that other hunters or persons may be present in the area.

– Choose a hunting position that gives you a good field of view, not only of an approaching turkey, but also of other hunters who may be in the area.

– Call out or whistle to other hunters who may approach; never wave or stand up.

– Never wear clothing or use accessories that are red, white or blue. A gobbler turkey head can be any and all of these three colors.

– Always identify your target and what is beyond before taking a shot. Never shoot at movement or sound.

– Always use a flashlight when walking in the dark; it reduces the risk of being mistaken for game by an irresponsible hunter.

Those 17 years old or younger may hunt wild turkeys during the 2010 spring youth turkey hunt but must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years old. The youth may use any legal shotgun, bow and arrow or crossbow and must be properly licensed.

Wild turkeys may be hunted only from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Hunting hours may vary on some state properties.
