Photo contest celebrates historic resources
From the Indiana Department of Natural Resources:
The DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology is
sponsoring its ninth annual photo contest to recognize Historic
Preservation Month in May.
The subject of the photo must be in Indiana and more than 50 years old. Images could include anything from a cemetery, to a main street, to a grain silo. The contest does not place limitations on the condition of the historic resource. Past entries have involved subject matter with conditions ranging from pristine to undergoing demolition.
Photos can be color or black and white, must be 8 x 10 inches, and matted with white or ivory mat board so final dimensions are 11 x 14 inches. Participants should not frame their photos.
The contest deadline is April 5, 2013.
The contest is free, and photographers can submit up to three entries per person.
Photos will be judged by a panel of DNR representatives, preservationists and photographers.
The deadline to submit is April 6.

Early Flight in the Dunes program at Indiana Dunes State Park, Feb. 23

Aviation pioneer Octave Chanute, who launched experimental gliders from
Indiana’s Lake Michigan sand dunes, will be the topic of a program at
Indiana Dunes State Park on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Early Flight in the Dunes starts at 2 p.m. CST at the nature center and will be presented by aviation researcher and historian Simine Short. Short will talk about Chanute’s early attempts at flight and offer insights into his personal and professional life.
Chanute was a French-born engineer who lived in Chicago. He encouraged other experimenters, including the Wright brothers.
The program is free after the standard entrance fee of $5 for in-state vehicles or $10 for out-of-state vehicles. For more information call the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center at (219) 926-1390.
