Crusaders sweep Carroll
The Norwell 7th-grade and 8th-grade boys’ basketball teams posted two victories Tuesday night against Carroll at Norwell. The 7th-grade Crusaders won 42-28, while the 8th-graders recorded a 43-29 win.
Andrew Oakes and Piercen Harnish each scored eight points to lead the 7th-grade Crusaders. Nathan Allison added seven points, Brandon Burch five, Adam Nahrwold three, Garrett Mohler three and Joseph Friend three. Chandler Shady and Ashton McCune both had two and Alex Hunter one.
The 8th-graders were led by David Vogel’s 14 points. Brent Bales had nine, Jonah Patten eight, Cal Clouser six, Graham Stoppenhagen four and Brett Wilson two.

Spaghetti supper at Southern Wells
The Southern Wells athletic department will be having a spaghetti supper on Friday, Jan. 22, in the high school cafeteria, beginning at 5 p.m. before the Leo vs. Southern Wells boys’ basketball games. A variety of spaghetti, garlic bread and salad will be served with a free will donation.

Norwell Baseball slates dinner
The Norwell Baseball Club will be having an all-you-can-eat fish and tenderloin dinner Friday, Feb. 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The girls’ basketball teams will be playing their last regular season games that evening against Southern Wells. Tickets are available from baseball players and coaches and also are being sold at all home basketball games at the home entrance of the gym. Pre-sale ticket prices are $8 for adults (13 and older) and $5 for children (ages 6-12). The price at the door is $9 for adults and $5.50 for children. Children under five may eat for no charge.

Elk Hoop Shoot

Southern Wells Elementary recently took part in the annual Elks Hoop Shoot competition. The winners, who represented SWES at the district level were (back row left to right) Hunter Oswalt, Grant Harris, Hunter Schreiber, Megan Fiechter, Jada Johnson, and Sarah Jones. The alternates were (front row left to right) Dylan Junk, Bryce Paxson, Austin Shuler, Brittany Tudor, Rachel Harvey, and Kirtlyn Noble. Jada Johnson and Sarah Jones advanced to the regional competition which will be held at Speece Fieldhouse.

Indiana High School Athletic Association teams with Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation to prepare youth speakers for anti-tobacco speeches

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 13, 2010) - In 2009, Hoosiers earned the unhappy
title as the state with the second highest rate of adult smokers, coming
in at more than 26 percent. But one Wells County student-athlete is
working to change this sad statistic for his, and future, generations.

Klay Fiechter, a senior football player at Norwell High School, joined
other top student-athletes from around the state as a participant in the
Youth Speakers' Bureau Program, developed by the IHSAA and Indiana
Tobacco Prevention and Cessation (ITPC). With the help of Indiana Teen
Institute Program Director and Lead Facilitator, Mark Kaser, the program
provides participants with the insights necessary to deliver confident,
well-constructed speeches on the importance of remaining tobacco free.

The 40 participants in this year's program were chosen from more than 90
student-athletes who are part of this year's IHSAA Role Model Program.
Now in its seventh year, the Role Model Program draws on the credibility
that high school student-athletes with recognizable names and faces have
in their communities. Student-athletes who achieve high grades, enjoy
athletic success and display superior citizenship are encouraged to
embrace their role model status and help to positively influence their
peers and young fans.

Students who signed a pledge agreeing to be tobacco, drug and alcohol
free and serve as positive role models for the community furthered their
dedication to the Role Model Program by attending one of two all-day
training sessions.

After attending the training session, Fiechter honed his anti-tobacco
speech, which he will present to groups throughout his community.

"High school sports have always been about more than just winning and
losing a game," said IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress. "They teach
dedication, strength of character and leadership - skills that Klay is
selflessly putting to use to benefit his school and community."

Raider girls sweep Jets in ACAC
The Southern Wells 7th-grade and 8th-grade girls’ basketball teams defeated Adams Central Monday. The 7th-grade Raiders won 27-13 and the 8th-graders won 37-16.
Kiarra Leas led the 7th-grade Raiders with 10 points. Lela Knowles added six, Emily Junk four, Brooke Penrod three, Meghan Yencer two and Timber Tucker two.
Carissa Carter paced the 8th-grade Raiders with 15 points and Ashton Prible netted 12. Katelyn Kline had four points, Olivia Mossburg three, Hilary Paxson two and Megan Thompson one.

Crusader 8th-grade girls romp
Olivia Geiger scored 13 points and Kelsey Beer added 10 to lead the Norwell Crusaders’ 8th-grade girls’ basketball team to a 53-10 romp over Prince Chapman Academy on Monday night at Norwell.
Brittany Barger and Alicia Coleman each added eight points, while Laken Chaney chipped in six. Kendal Beckstein and Kylee Byerly each had four for the Crusaders.

Leo girls take two from Tigers
The Leo Middle School girls’ basketball teams handed the Bluffton Tigers a pair of losses Monday at Bluffton.
The 7th-grade Tigers (10-2) were nipped in overtime 26-25, which was their first loss (4-1) against an Allen County Athletic Conference opponent.
Erin McKinley led the Tigers with 10 points. Emma Thompson added seven, Morgan Corle four and Catie Neuenschwander four.
Leo beat the 8th-grade Tigers 34-14. The Tigers (3-9, 1-4) were led by Taeler Meadows with six points. Sierra Steffen had four, Hanna Mock two and Laura Stroud two.

Wrestling club registration reset
The Bluffton Wrestling Club registration, which was slated for Monday night, has been rescheduled for next Monday Jan. 18, due to the high school meet against Garrett that was moved to Jan. 11. Sign in starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by practice from 6-7:30 p.m.

Rumble auction raises $1,826
FORT WAYNE — The annual silent auction held at the “Rumble in Fort Wayne” indoor races raised $1,826 for the Kenny Irwin Jr. Memorial Foundation’s Dare to Dream Camp — a 27-acre campground near New Castle.
